How on-demand apps can maximize revenue with in-app retargeting

The rise of on-demand apps

In the digital-first world, consumers have become accustomed to convenience and immediacy. From streaming services and food delivery, to e-commerce and comparison sites, our needs can be fulfilled with just a few clicks on a smartphone. The online on-demand economy has grown tremendously since it began, with a compound growth rate averaging 10.92% annually. Today for example, it’s estimated that over 50 million people regularly use food delivery apps in the USA alone.

In more recent years, increased competition in the app space has led to a gradual but inevitable plateau in market penetration. This means that on-demand apps are forced to make more strategic marketing decisions to ensure customer growth and revenue. On-demand apps are rich in customer data, which makes in-app retargeting an extremely powerful and precise marketing channel. Why you should combine user acquisition with retargeting

Advertising an on-demand app requires a two-prong approach. The first stage is user acquisition (UA), in which your ads typically focus on conveying brand awareness and product benefits to potential customers who haven’t yet downloaded your app. A new install however is only the first step, because it does not guarantee that the user will use your app or make a purchase. Reports have shown that in 2024, 46.1% of all downloaded apps were uninstalled within the first 30 days.

Because revenue and retention is the key to success, the next stage of your marketing strategy should involve retargeting campaigns. Retargeting is when you show ads to your existing users who have already installed your app. By segmenting these users into groups based on their in-app behavior, you can present them with highly tailored messaging that encourages them to perform specific actions – such as registering an account after the installation, using certain features within the app, or making first-time and recurring purchases. This helps to move users through your sales funnel and reduce customer churn. It also helps to drive retention, in-app engagements and revenue events.

Four key tips for app retargeting

The traditional approach to retargeting is to segment users according to where they are in your sales funnel, then run ads with tailored messaging to move each group closer to the point of purchase. This approach addresses key stages across the user’s journey and can be scaled to your whole user base - but there are many other user signals that app businesses can use to improve their ad performance and return on ad spend (ROAS). Here are four key things you should consider for your retargeting campaigns:

1. Timing

On-demand apps are used spontaneously by their customers – but this doesn’t mean their behaviors are hard to predict. By analyzing your existing user’s purchasing history, you can retarget them with ads in anticipation of peak sales windows. A food delivery app for example can drive up sales by retargeting its users shortly before meal times. Pair that with a sense of urgency, (like offering them a discount on their favorite restaurant if they order before 7pm) and the user is much more likely to make a purchase within your app.

2. Location targeting

In-app retargeting allows you to retarget your existing users based on their location. Although segmenting your audience to target specific geographic areas can be somewhat time consuming, there are many ways that on-demand apps can benefit from it. For example, people living in an area that is relatively underserved by supermarkets or public transport may be more inclined to purchase from on-demand apps that deliver groceries or offer mobility services - such as car hailing and bike rental.

3. Personalized recommendations

On-demand apps with a wide range of products (such as shopping platforms), can leverage their user’s previous purchases to recommend items that they might wish to buy in future. You could target users with ads for a product that they’ve viewed before but never purchased, or you might advertise a product to them that they’ve bought a few times in the past and may wish to buy again. You could even show your users entirely new products that have proven popular among other users with similar attributes and purchasing behaviors.

4. Dynamic product ads

Dynamic product ads (DPAs) can connect to your app’s ‘product catalog’ and automatically populate itself with relevant product recommendations based on the attributes of the user who is being retargeted. This means you don’t need fresh ad creatives and copy for each product ad, because the information is pulled directly from your app. You can even use deep links in your DPAs so that when a retargeted user clicks on the ad, they will arrive directly at that specific product within your app. This allows for a much shorter user journey as the user does not have to manually search for the product in your app.

Summary

Marketers tasked with promoting on-demand apps must advertise strategically to drive revenue in an increasingly competitive marketplace. UA campaigns are crucial for growth, but retargeting remains the best way to retain users and increase their customer lifetime value. For on-demand apps, programmatic in-app retargeting is one of the most powerful channels. Retargeting

The conventional way of retargeting relies on user IDs, such as AAID and IDFA.

Reshuffle

Reshuffle indicates the randomization and marking of users when they were once part of a test or control group.

In incrementality measurement, reshuffling the group assignment for a specific application fights aggregated bias over time where one group doesn't see any ads while the other group is constantly exposed to them.

Reshuffling is relevant in cases where a test has been running for a long time and/or in campaigns the experience more extensive changes to the campaign setups, segmentation, or creative strategy.

Real-Time Bidding (RTB)

The process by which individual ad placements are bought and sold via programmatic auctions that happen instantaneously. With real-time bidding, ad buyers bid on an ad space, which, if the auction is won, instantly displays the buyer's ad. This lets demand-side players such as advertisers or DSPs optimize the purchase of ad placements from multiple sources.

Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT)

A method that randomly separates a specific population into two groups that are as similar to each other as possible, namely the test group and control group.

Key Performance Indicator (KPI)

Intent-to-Treat (ITT)

An incrementality testing methodology where no ads from the campaign are shown to devices within the control group. Also known as a ‘holdout test’. Cost-free and easy to implement, but with a relatively high level of noise.

This method compares the behavior of all users in both groups. In the test group, this includes both exposed and unexposed users

A method of measuring the impact of a specific activity, on top of organic and other activity.

Incremental Revenue (iRevenue)

The estimated revenue caused directly by the campaign.

Incremental Return On Ad Spend (iROAS)

A KPI used in calculating how cost-efficient a campaign is. This is used to evaluate the relationship between incremental revenue and the amount of money spent on the campaign. The figure is typically represented in percentage.

Formula:

Ratio: IRevenue ÷ ad spend = IROAS

Incremental Cost Per Action (iCPA)

Incremental Conversions

The estimated amount of conversions caused directly by the campaign.

In-app Event

Actions made by a user within the app, such as log-in, registration, completion of onboarding, or purchases. These events can be tracked with the help of an MMP.

Impression

The deployment of the ad to the ad placement. An impression might not necessarily mean that the ad has been viewed.

Identifier for advertisers (IDFA)

A unique random device identifier Apple generates and assigns to every iOS device. Advertisers can use this to track user activity across apps, show them personalized ads, and attribute ad interactions.

Ghost Ads

A testing methodology that shows devices in the control group an ad ran by another advertiser on the platform, therefore removing any additional cost for clicks and impressions. The control group behavior is then marked with a ‘ghost impression’, which gives the information on which control group users would have been exposed.

Refers to the process of identifying which conversions belong to which preceding click or impression. Common attribution methodologies include:

  • Click-Through Attribution - Determines the source of a conversion based on the user’s click activity.

  • View-Through Attribution - Determines the source of a conversion based on the ad impression delivered to the user.

  • Deterministic Attribution - A model that establishes the origin of a user’s conversion from a specific click or impression, based on unique device IDs.

  • Probabilistic Attribution - A model that establishes the likelihood of a user’s conversion originating from a specific click or impression, based on the data logged on both occasions, such as device language, timezone, IP address, and OS version.

  • Last-Touch Attribution - A model that establishes a match between the action taken by a user (e.g. app open, purchase) and its corresponding ad click or impression. When a user converts from an ad, the DSP that delivered the respective ad is given full credit for that conversion event.

  • Multi-Touch Attribution - Also known as multi-channel attribution. A model determines the value of every touchpoint on the way to a conversion. Rather than giving full credit to one ad, multi-touch attribution divides the credit among all advertising channels that the user has interacted with, leading to the conversion.

Causal Impact Analysis

Similar to measuring the effect TV ads have, the principle is based on running campaigns on identifiable sub-markets (test group), while leaving other sub-markets unexposed (control group).

Ghost Bids

An incrementality testing methodology based on Ghost Ads, adapted for retargeting campaigns. The difference is that it removes all devices that are not seen on ad exchanges, or that would not be bid on, from both test and control groups, to reduce noise. A bid is placed as usual for the test group, while the control group is tracked with ‘ghost bids’ (bids that could have been placed, but weren’t in the end).

Return on Advertising Spend (ROAS)

User Acquisition (UA)

A mobile marketing effort used to attract new users to an app. Paid UA may refer to ads shown in mobile ad networks or social media channels, while non-paid UA involves app store optimization and promotion on the advertiser’s own channels.
